GAME COMMISSION SEEKS FEEDBACK FROM LICENSE-BUYERS

NEWS – Solomon's Words for the Wise (10)solomonswords0 Comments

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is asking hunters to provide feedback on their antlerless deer license buying experience this summer.

License sales get underway Monday, June 24 at 8 a.m., when antlerless deer licenses will be available for the threeWildlife Management Units where demand is highest – WMUs 1B, 2G and 3A. Licenses in these WMUs will be sold on a first come, first serve basis until the allotted number of licenses sells out, and only Pennsylvania residents may purchase antlerless licenses initially.

Then, from Thursday, June 27 through Sunday, July 7, antlerless licenses for the remaining 19 WMUs will be available to residents. Those seeking licenses in any of these WMUs won’t need to wait in line for them; they’re guaranteed to get one, as long as they buy before 7 a.m. on Monday, July 8 – when the resident-only portion of the first round of antlerless license sales ends.

PUC Encourages Former Affordable Connectivity Program Customers to Seek Other Assistance Options to Access the Internet

NEWS – Solomon's Words for the Wise (42)solomonswords0 Comments

Affordable Connectivity Program Funding Ends

HARRISBURG – In light of the recent ending of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) due to a lack of federal funding, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today encourages Pennsylvanians to research other assistance options, in addition to reaching out to their internet service providers. The ACP provided eligible customers with a $30 per month discount on their internet access service and a one-time $100 credit towards a device purchase.

According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) has officially ended. The PUC is encouraging households who were receiving the ACP benefit to research other assistance programs available to help with broadband assistance, including theLifeline program, which provides consumers up to $9.25 off the cost of phone or internet. Households are also encouraged to consult their internet company directly to learn more about other assistance programs.

Lifeline Program Benefits

Up to $9.25 Per Household, Per Month Discount

Lifelineis a federal program that provides a $5.25 per household, per month discount on your qualifying landline or wireless standalone voice service or a $9.25 per household, per month discount on your qualifying wireless or landline internet service or qualifying bundled telephone/internet service product from a landline or wireless provider. The discount appears in the form of a reduction to the bill you pay your service provider.

The benefit can be used for voice (telephone), Broadband Internet Access Service (or BIAS, usually called internet service), or a combined telephone/internet service product from a landline or wireless provider.

Flag Retirement Ceremony Marks End of Scouting Season in Duke Center, PA

-Nicholas Valentine

DUKE CENTER, PA — June 14, 2024: In a solemn observance of Flag Day, Scout Troop 413 from Duke Center and Troop 512 from Eldred conducted a flag retirement ceremony, respectfully retiring several U.S. flags. The ceremony, held in Duke Center, PA, drew scouts, leaders, and community members together to honor the symbol of American freedom and unity. This event also marked the conclusion of the Scouting season, with the new season scheduled to begin on September 1.

A flag retirement ceremony provides a dignified method for disposing of worn and tattered American flags. According to the U.S. Flag Code, flags that are no longer fit for display should be destroyed in a respectful manner, typically by burning. Such ceremonies are often organized by veteran groups, civic organizations, and scout troops to ensure the flags are retired with the honor they deserve.

During the ceremony, scouts from Troop 413 and Troop 512 carefully inspected each flag to confirm it was unserviceable. The ceremony included a recitation of the flag’s history and significance, and a pledge of allegiance, all reinforcing the values of patriotism and respect for national symbols.

The flag retirement ceremony not only honored national symbols but also marked the end of the current Scouting season. Scout Troop 413 and Troop 512 will resume activities on September 1. New members are encouraged to join and embark on a journey of learning, adventure, and personal growth. The start of the new season offers an excellent opportunity for those interested in joining the Scouting program.

The flag retirement ceremony conducted exemplifies the values instilled by the Scouting program. By honoring national symbols and traditions, scouts learn invaluable lessons in respect, responsibility, and leadership. As these young scouts continue their journey, they are well-prepared to become tomorrow’s leaders, equipped with the skills and values necessary to positively impact their communities and the world.

Paying It Forward: former student establishes scholarship to honor Coach Mastrogiacomo

NEWS – Solomon's Words for the Wise (54)solomonswords0 Comments

NEWS – Solomon's Words for the Wise (55)

The Coach Ted Mastrogiacomo Memorial Scholarship Fund was recently created at the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF) by a former student of Coach Mastrogiacomo, a well-loved principal and coach at St. Marys Area High School in the 1960’s.

Dr. John Lyons, who established the scholarship fund, said Coach Mastrogiacomo saved his life and many other students. Coach was a mentor and role model to John, challenging him to be the best he could be as he moved through his high school years. John said he would never have become a successful doctor of radiology without the Coach’s support. The influence of a teacher or coach goes beyond teaching the skills of a particular sport or class and extends to personal development and life skills. They are often a trusted source of advice for important life decisions.
